Look into your eyes Hamda
A Novel in Arabic
Written by Amna Almansoori
Third Edition 2007

This story is about Hamda, a girl who was born into a traditional family in the UAE and is favoured less than her brothers especially by her father. This is not because they are better than her in any way but just because they are BOYS. Since the ages of ten questions have sprung from everything happening around her and eventually she finds the answers in her uncle's house.
The answer is his huge range of books and the key word is READ!
"Dear Hamda, our soul is like the clouds and books are the sea, the more you read the more vapour will quench your soul until it becomes rainy and full of life, " Hamda's uncle says

As Hamda starts to read and begins to find herself the clouds become heavy and it is time to rain.
"Like the clouds, every soul will choose a land to rain on its space, some people choose musical notes, some choose the easel and some just choose paper and pen" Hamda's uncle says
With encouragement from her uncle and Rashid- Hamda's potential fiancé- she chooses to write about everything she feels and thinks until she faces another issue: is it allowed for a female to express her opinions about everything she believes and feels?
"Sometimes the beginning is so difficult and the end is so sad but beginnings and ends are not important. The most important thing is what we can achieve in between" encourages Rashid
When Hamda turns fifteen her mother asks her to wear the "abaya" for the first time. The main reason is because her fiancé has proposed marriage as he wants her to accompany him while he studies a broad. Now she must act and be treated like a lady and has to make the most difficult decision of her life. Should she please her family and abandon her dreams and follow her beloved fiancé, or should she fight to get her rights in planning her life the way she wants.
"The history of each community is like a chain and we are links in this chain. It’s our choice to be a strong link between the past and the future or to plan our life the way we like without considering the chain's direction. But then we may become the weak link that may drop from the chain and gets lost in the end" Hamda's uncle counsels
Well, sometimes our destiny is faster than us; Hamda's mother is killed in car accident that also paralyses her father. Now she has the chance to accept her fiancé's marriage proposal and leave her family house that has become full of tears and sad memories. Her father and brothers never appreciate her BUT!
"When the cloud becomes rainy and full of benevolence, it won't matter where it rains, it will rain on every land it reaches" Hamda thinks
For that reason Hamda decides to delay the dream for a while and stay with her father and brothers hoping to show them how a girl could be the best mercy that God has ever created.

After ten years the father passes away and each one of her brothers becomes busy with his own life. Then her faithful fiancé comes back to return life to her old dreams. Will she go back with him? Is it possible for dreams to become true even after we bury them for such a long time?

Look into your eyes they are the mirror of your soul.
